Parathyroid Antibodies – Referral
Code:
PTA
Sample Type:
2mL Serum (Gel 5mL Yellow tube)
Ref Ranges/Units:
Positive or Negative
Normal result = Negative
Turnaround:
2 – 3 Weeks
Frequency of Analysis: Referred to Sheffield Hospital, sent every day except Friday
Special Precautions/Comments:
Method: Referral test; Sheffield Teaching Hospital
Interferences:ANA and AMA are excluded by analysis of mouse Liver Kidney Stomach tisues, for all suspected parathyroid positves. Endocrine antibodies can also excluded by analysis of monkey adrenal, ovary and testis tissue
Interpretation: Results are reported as being either NEGATIVE or POSITIVE. The test should be regarded as an aid to diagnosis and not as diagnostic in itself. Given that the incidence of parathyroid autoantibodies is relatively low in hypoparathyroidism, other factors must be taken into consideration such as clinical details, patient’s symptoms and tests of glandular function. If interpretation is difficult the test may be repeated with monkey absorbed IgG antiserum.
Additional Information:
Indication: Autoimmune hypoparathyroidism
Background Information: Parathyroid antibodies are associated with autoimmune hypoparathyroidism. Autoimmune hypoparathyroidism can be seen in other autoimmune endocrinopathies such as autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome type 1 [1]. There is evidence to suggest that autoimmune hypoparathyroidism is due to activating antibodies targeted to the calcium sensing receptor [1,2].
