Apolipoprotein B

Special Precautions/Comments:

Additional Information:

ApoB measurement is used to evaluate the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and to aid in the diagnosis of specific lipid disorders.

ApoB (apoB100 or apolipoprotein B100) is the major protein constituent of LDL. It is also found in VLDL and chylomicrons. Apo B-100 is recognised by LDL receptors on the surface of hepatocytes and peripheral tissues, promoting the uptake of cholesterol into cells.

ApoB levels increase in pregnancy, hypercholesterolemia, LDL receptor defects, bile obstruction, type II hyperlipidemia and nephrotic syndrome. Apolipoprotein B levels decrease during liver disease, α‑β lipoproteinemia, sepsis and oestrogen administration.
