Ova Cysts & Parasites – ONLY (Faeces)

Special Precautions/Comments:

N.B. Only sample meeting the following criteria will be selected for parasitology investigations:

Patient has travel history to the following:

  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Central or South America
  • Indian Subcontinent

Patient clinically presents with:

  • Steatorrhoea
  • Eosinophilia
  • Weight loss
  • Immunocompromised
  • Chronic investigations, where other tests are negative – approval from Consultant Microbiologist

Patients with travel history Continental Europe (including Turkey and Spain) will be examined for Cryptosporidium and Giardia by routine enteric PCR only.

Method:  Microscopy investigation. Calibration: Graticule (eyepiece micrometer) calibrated using UKAS accredited stage micrometer following microscope service/repair.  EQA scheme: UKNEQAS Faecal Parasitology distribution.  IQC: N/A.

Interpretation: Species will be reported where seen. Any positive results will be confirmed by a second qualified Biomedical Scientist. Consultant Microbiologists may add clinical comments where appropriate.
