Caeruloplasmin

Special Precautions/Comments:

Additional Information:

Caeruloplasmin is a circulating copper binding protein and an acute phase protein which is increased in inflammatory responses or conditions. Deficiency of caeruloplasmin results in deposition of excess copper causing tissue damage.

Caeruloplasmin deficiency is characteristic of Wilson’s disease, which often presents as liver disease. It is also seen in the rare neurodegenerative disorder Menke’s disease (also known as Kinky Hair Syndrome). Caeruloplasmin is usually measured in the first instance as a screen, and copper is subsequently measured to further investigate.
