Background information: Dengue fever is a non-endemic to the UK and is caused by a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes. Dengue fever should be considered for patients who have recently returned from endemic areas and are presenting with severe flu-like illness and fever, this pertains to large regions of South and South East Asia, South and Central America, Africa and the Caribbean. Dengue fever has also been noted in parts of Southern Europe during Spring-Summer months, including France, Italy and Spain.
