Malarial Parasite Screen is comprised of both a rapid diagnostic test and full microscopy screen to establish the presence of malarial parasites:
• Plasmodium Falciparum
• Plasmodium Ovale
• Plasmodium Vivax
• Plasmodium Malariae
• Plasmodium Knowlesi
Negative rapid diagnostic tests are reported as ‘Malaria RDT negative’
Positive rapid diagnostic tests are reported as ‘Malaria RDT positive’
Positive results are reported by Consultant Haematologists following film review stating the species of parasite detected and in cases of Plasmodium Falciparum/Knowlesi percentage of parasites present. Negative results are reported following film review stating 'No malarial parasites detected. This does not exclude a clinical diagnosis of malaria. Please repeat if clinically indicated'
