Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum in the mid luteal phase. The corpus luteum is formed following release of a secondary oocyte from an ovarian follicle during ovulation. Progesterone can therefore be used as a marker of ovulation. Measurement of progesterone is performed on day 21 and used in the investigation of infertility, oligomenorrhoea and amenorrhoea.
