Aspirin is widely used for mild-to-moderate pain relief (analgesic) and as an anti-inflammatory. However, overdose can cause metabolic acidosis with a high anion gap, gastrointestinal and central nervous system disturbances, encephalopathy and nephrotoxicity. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are required to minimize these.  

Salicylate is the pharmacologically active metabolite of aspirin, which is measured to monitor therapeutic levels and to investigate a possible overdose.
