Additional Information:
TSH receptor antibodies (TRAbs) can have a stimulatory effect, inhibitory effect or no effect. Autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Grave’s disease) is caused by stimulatory TRAbs.
Measurement of TRAbs is therefore used in the diagnosis and monitoring of Grave’s disease. TRAbs can also cross the placenta, therefore measurement of TRAbs is also used in the monitoring of pregnant women with Grave’s disease to assess the risk of thyrotoxicosis to the foetus.
TRAb is assessed using a TSH Binding Inhibitory Immunoglobulin (TBII) method which determines if the serum contains immunoglobulins which may block the binding of TSH to an in vitro receptor preparation.
